Abstract

In Mexico, a large part of adolescents use tobacco, unlike other North American countries. Tobacco consumption is caused by various reasons that increase dependence on nicotine. This research described and analyzed the motivations for tobacco consumption and nicotine dependence in school adolescents. It was a descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study. 221 students from a public high school in Coatzacoalcos Veracruz, Mexico participated. In addition, the Motives for Smoking Scale and Fagerström Test were applied to collect data. The information obtained was analyzed with descriptive statistics, Chi-Square test and Spearman's Rho test. It was found that adolescent men and women have similar tobacco consumption habits, regarding the time that passes from waking up to smoking their first cigarette, the number of cigarettes smoked per day and average level of dependence on nicotine. On the other hand, the social motivation for tobacco consumption was significant in men and women. Likewise, psychological and physical motivation increase consumption during the first hours after getting up. Furthermore, psychological motivation was associated with nicotine dependence. Men and women coincided in their tobacco consumption habits and average nicotine dependence.
