Perception of quality in postpartum maternal care service in public hospitals in Mexico

Abstract

Postpartum care is a fundamental indicator of health-system performance, especially in contexts where service shortcomings can significantly increase risks for both mother and newborn. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the perceived quality of postpartum care in public hospitals in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, focusing on two main dimensions: 1) adherence to clinical protocols and 2) identification of improvement opportunities arising from the service’s needs and weaknesses. Additionally, the study explored emerging sentiments regarding the perception and experience of postpartum care, allowing for the identification of both strengths and critical service gaps. Results revealed that, although the clinical response provided by health personnel was adequate, there was a notable deficiency in post-discharge follow-up care. This finding underscores the importance of implementing a second phase of the intervention aimed at reinforcing the identified weaknesses and addressing needs through technological innovation, with the goal of enhancing the quality of postpartum care provided to mothers.
